About 6 hours from Colombo by road.
Ella is a small hill country town surrounded by tea estates and walks: up Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock, and out to the Nine Arch Bridge, where the trains cross a stone viaduct in the forest.
Guests come for two or three nights, for the walks in the morning and the view in the evening, and the terrace of the place they stay is often the best seat in town.
The properties
Guesthouses and homestays run by families, small hotels on the hillsides with views across the gap, and a growing number of larger hotels on the edges of town.
The season
Busy through most of the year, with travellers on the hill country route. The driest months in this part of the hills are June to August.

Many guests decide on Ella late and book from their phones on the way. A single page site with the view at the top and a prewritten WhatsApp message gets the booking in the time it takes them to open a booking app.
We come to Ella from Colombo, about 6 hours away, at our cost, and photograph the property ourselves in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. If the weather is wrong on the day, we come back.
