About 2½ to 3 hours from Colombo by road.
Tangalle is the start of the south coast’s quieter stretch: wide beaches with fewer people on them, coves between rocky headlands, and a fishing harbour in the town itself.
Rekawa, just east of the town, is known for the sea turtles that nest on its beach. Guests come for space and calm, and tend to stay longer than they do further west.
The properties
Villas rented whole, small boutique hotels set in large gardens, and eco lodges on the beaches either side of the town.
The season
Busiest from December to April. The southwest monsoon from May to September brings a quieter, cheaper season, a little less wet here than further west.

A week in a whole villa is a large booking, and the agent’s commission on it is a large number. Tangalle’s guests also plan carefully and read everything; a site with the whole property photographed properly answers their questions before they write to ask.
We come to Tangalle from Colombo, about 2½ to 3 hours away, at our cost, and photograph the property ourselves in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. If the weather is wrong on the day, we come back.
