Southwest coast
Hotel and villa websites in Galle.
A walled town that guests choose by the building.
Galle.
About 2 hours from Colombo by road.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a walled town on a headland, with streets of colonial houses inside the ramparts and the lighthouse at its corner. Most guests come for a night or two inside the walls, then move on along the coast.
Around the Fort, the town spreads into the hills and down the coast towards Unawatuna, where the properties get larger and the gardens deeper.
The properties
Small hotels and guesthouses in restored houses inside the Fort, where the building is the whole reason to stay, and villas with pools in the green hills behind the town.
The season
The southwest coast is busiest from December to April. May to September brings the southwest monsoon and a quieter, cheaper season.
What a site of its own does here.
In the Fort, guests choose between a dozen restored houses side by side on the booking sites, each reduced to the same tile. A site of your own shows the courtyard, the ceilings and the street outside at the hour it looks best, which is the one thing the listing cannot.
We come to Galle from Colombo, about 2 hours away, at our cost, and photograph the property ourselves in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. If the weather is wrong on the day, we come back.
